Dear Family and Friends,
A few years ago I represented a young man who had been in a hit and run while riding his bike through Beverly Hills. Thankfully, witnesses got the woman’s license plate numbers.
When the police picked up the 18-year-old woman, she claimed she didn’t know that she’d hit anyone. That’s in spite of the fact that 10 of the cyclist’s teeth were embedded in the back window of her vehicle.
My client’s body and mind were broken in that accident. In a Herculean effort, doctors were able to patch him up, but he, truly, would never be the same. I knew that whatever compensation I was able to recover for my client would determine his future.
Thankfully, though the woman’s insurance coverage was limited, I was able to convince the woman’s father, a doctor, to make a contribution to what ended up being a settlement of almost $2.5 million.
This was the moment I decided that I wanted to do more than assist cyclists who had suffered serious personal injuries or families who had lost a loved one in a bike crash. I wanted to be part of the movement to make the streets safer for all, cyclists and pedestrians.
Three years ago Pocrass & De Los Reyes LLP became a sponsor of the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition’s Los Angeles River Ride. We continue to sponsor this wonderful event that is the LACBC’s largest fundraiser.
Shortly after the first L.A. River Ride that we participated in, I was honored to be asked to join the LACBC’s board of directors.
An amazing organization, the nonprofit LACBC advocates for a safer environment for everyone who rides or walks in all 88-cities of Los Angeles County. It also supports the Greenway 2020 campaign, which strives to complete all 51-miles of the L.A. River Bikeway that will run from Canoga Park to Long Beach.
This year, in addition to sponsoring the 16th annual Los Angeles River Ride, I plan on bicycling the 25-mile ride in order to raise funds for the LACBC to continue and to expand its work.
Please consider donating to my ride. Whether you can give one dollar or a thousand dollars, I promise you your donation will be put to a good and important use. And, if you’re interested in riding with me, contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org
